Featured Holidays

Holiday Lydia Lewis Alexander continued her service as Southern Area Parliamentarian for The Links, Incorporated, President of the Bessemer Planning and Zoning Commission secretary of the Canaan Kindergarten Advisory Board and a trustee of Omicron Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.  Of course she continues to enjoy her favorite pastime which is traveling.

Holiday Denise Blue Poe embarked on a new partnership venture since our last Concourse.  In December 2009, Holiday Denise, and her partner of four years, Aaron Killings, Jr., opened the doors to their own law practice – KILLINGS & POE, LLC.  Having purchased and renovated a store-front office in historic downtown Bessemer, Alabama in 2008, the partners had the perfect spot from which to launch their new law firm.  Holiday Denise and Mr. Killings continue to serve as Assistant City Attorneys for the City of Bessemer; however, they expanded their reach into the community when they established their own practice.  The partners hope to provide legal counsel those residents in that community who are often denied representation.

Chapter News

The members of the Birmingham Chapter of The Holidays, Incorporated enjoyed a year of fun and fellowship which culminated in June at their Biennial Bridge Social.

In addition to entertaining their bridge playing friends, they also invited three tables of guests who had expressed an interest in learning to play the game.   Chaired by Holiday Margaret Gadd, the event was held at Avondale Villa and recognized not only the top scoring bridge players but also included a special tribute to the Labor Days.

Eight year old Malek Kofi serenaded Labor Days and guests with an oboe solo.  Holiday Queen McArthur led the tribute to the Labor Days by singing the verse of “The Holiday Woman” that begins “Labor Days, Labor Days, really her kings . . .” and gifts were presented to the Labor Days by the club.

Monetary prizes were awarded to the top three bridge players and the remaining players selected gifts from an array of prizes.  A delectable lunch was served.

Holiday Denise Blue Poe served as the instructor for the beginning players with a Holiday assisting at each table.  The sessions were so helpful and so enjoyable that the guests asked for future sessions so they could learn more.

The chapter plans to apply for funding from the national organization to assist in securing facilities and instructional supplies for the group.

The group welcomed new member, Judge Katrina Ross, as their newest Holiday in December, and approved the addition of Mrs. Rosemary Ashford, who will be inducted in the fall.
